Kirkness trying for fifth title
The No. 1 seed B. D. Kirkness, yesterday took the first step in his quest to win the Canterbury snooker title for the fifth successive time when he beat G. Edlin in four frames.
Once into stride, Kirkness played very soundly, but Edlin provided strong opposition in the opening two frames. Kirkness took the first on the pink and he went down, 19-72, in the second. However, he comfortably won the next two and in the process made a break of 39, the highest of the day. W. Adams and R. Franks, who are seeded three and four, both moved easily into the second round with 3-0 victories. The No. 2 seed, A. will play his first match tonight.
Four of yesterday’s matches went the full five frames. The closest finish was in the encounter between T. Mintrom and J. Young. Mintrom won on the black in the fifth frame. Results:—
