APPEAL BY COLLEGE
Both the Department of Education and the Department of Maori and Island Affairs had declined a request by Te Wai Pounamu Maori Girls’ College board for financial help, said the board’s chairman (the Very Rev. M. L. Underhill) on Thursday evening. “We did think after the Minister of Maori and Island Affairs (Mr Maclntyre) opened the appeal that we might qualify for a Government subsidy,” Dean Underhill said.
The mystery envelope appeal organised by the appeal committee had raised about $30,000, he said, bringing the total raised since the appeal opened in April to $73,000. The appeal’s target is $125,000, of which $75,000 will be put aside in the form of endowments to offset the annual losses incurred by the college, and $50,000 for building and renovation work.
Almost $5OO had been promised by Anglican parishes in the form of annuities, Dean Underhill said, and the Wairakei-Bishopdaie Roman Catholic Church had promised $l5O.
Business firms had come to the board’s help in a number of ways. One firm had provided 20 mattresses, and another had offered concessions on kitchenware. It was hoped that a service organisation would contribute towards the installation of a stove, dishwasher, and other kitchen equipment. Dean Underhill said.
