Prices rise 40 p.c. at Hereford sale
Run bull prices showed a lift of 40 per cent on last year at the annual South Island Hereford sale In Timaru yesterday.
From an entry of 104, 97 were sold at auction for an average of $756, compared with $545 for 78 sold last year. It was. the best of the 10 annual sales held so far.
The run bull section also saw a new record set for an individual beast. This was paid by J. G. Murray, of Kekerengu, for a horned bull from L. J. Williams, of Rangiora Prices for led (or stud) bulls were not quite as strong as last year. From the entry of eight, seven were sold at an average of $lO2l, compared with $ll4l for six sold last year. The overall sale average was $774 for 104 head, compared with $5BB last year. Buyers attended from widespread parts of the South Island, and odd sales were made to the North Island.
Although a new average was set for run bulls, the sale had ’ts slow patches. But when good quality bulls from well-regarded herds were put into the ring, the bidding was animated. All told, 17 run bulls fetched $lOOO or more, and two vendors in this section obtained averages of more than $lOOO. Seven horned Herefnrds from R. Williams, of Fox Glacier, sold from $9OO to $l5OO to average $1228. and L. N. James and Company (Middlemarch) sold four polled bulls at $lOOO to $l2OO to average $llOO.
