OVERSEAS STUDENTS

Doubts voiced in Australia

(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) CANBERRA, July 21.

Many overseas students were undertaking courses at Australian universities which would not lead to employment in their home country when they returned, an inquiry into foreign aid was told in Canberra.

Dr Wung Gungwu, professor of Far Eastern history at the Australian National University, told the Parliamentary joint Committee on Foreign Affairs that this was happening in spite of Australian inquiries about employment prospects before visas were issued to prospective students. Dr Gungwu said that Asian authorities were asked by the Australian Government about job prospects in certain fields over the next five years, but Asian governments, let alone the Australian authorities, were unable to make such predictions, and if they did so, they could be proved wrong by changes in technology, planning, numbers studying, and many other factors.
