Good market for ewes at Ashburton
There wee a particularly good market for both good-condition ewes and ewe hoggets at the Ashburton breeding ewe and hogget fair this week.
A very good quality yarding consisted of 8850 adult ewes, 500 two-tooth ewes, 7150 ewe hoggets, and 320 wether hoggets, of which most were autumn shorn. Adult ewes met a good Inquiry, only a small percentage going outside Ashburton County—to mainly North Canterbury, Otago, and South Canterbury.
Top price for ewes was for a pen of 126 well-grown mixedaged Border-Romney cross ewes bred by McLauchlan’s Grassmere, There was a very strong demand for well-grown ewe hoggets. All breeds sold well, a big proportion of hoggets going as far south as Invercargill and as far north as Kalkoura and also to the West Coast. Top price for ewe hoggets was for a pen of 218 very well bred and woolly Romneys from R. H. Watson, which sold for $lO.lO. Also, W. R. George sold a pen of 141 well-bred and well-grown Romney hoggets at $9.50. Values were:—
Romney ewes.—Two-tooth ewes, $7.50; mixed aged ewes, $6.10 to $7.35; one-year ewes, $5.30 to $6.75.
Leading prices were:— C. A. Watson, 500 five-year Romney ewes, $6.50 to $7.35; Fleming Farming Company. 550 mixed aged Romney ewes, $6.10 to $7.35; J. I. Anderson, 500 oneyear Romney ewes, $6.20 to $6.75; R. M. Gray. 300 one-year Romney ewes $6.20 to $6.40: Isherwood Farm Company, 89 two-year Romney ewes at $6.60; Lili Bros, 380 mixed-aged Romney ewes at $6.35; Clarkson Bros, 150 oneyear Romney ewes at $6.40; Est. M. A. Watson, 148 one-year Romney ewes at $6.20. Corriedale ewes.—Mixed-aged ewes; $5.60 to $6.80. H. G. Mowat, 168 mixed-aged ewes at $6.80. Also. G. C. Keast, 111 annual draft three-quarter-bred ewes at $6.20; J. M. Hampton, 450 four-year-old halfbred ewes at $5.05 to $6.50.
