Hydro scheme opposed
The Christchurch Fruit and Vegetable Wholesalers’ Association is opposed to the proposal by the New Zealand Electricity Department to flood valuable apricotgrowing land in the Cromwell district by the raising of the Clutha River for a hydro-electric scheme. The association said in a statement yesterday that it would put forward a remit opposing the flooding of the land for discussion at the annual conference of the New Zealand Fruit and Produce Merchants’ and Auctioneers’ Federation in Christchurch in October.
