VETERAN CHOSEN

Labour tie in campaign

(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) WASHINGTON, July 21.

Senator George McGovern has chosen a veteran politician and a former Democratic national chairman, Mr Lawrence O’Brien, to lead his campaign to unseat President Nixon in November. The Democratic Presidential nominee told a press conference that Mr O’Brien, as national campaign chairman, would be the foremost consultant on the over-all policy and strategy of the campaign.

The move is seen as an attempt to reassure old-guard politicians who have been cool to Senator McGovern’s candidacy. Mr O'Brien is expected also to improve Senator McGovern’s standing with organised labour because of his close ties with labour leaders since managing the late President Kennedy’s campaign in 1960.
