Labour shortage at Lyttelton

There was a big labour short age on the Lyttelton waterfront yesterday. In addition to 590 unionists and six nonunionists, 41 crew from the Straat Lagos, Regent Fleur and Tientsin were employed. This still left a shortage of 323 men (22 gangs). The Rockhampton Star and Holmdale were idle at first and others were short-manned. An improvement is expected today. * * * A large, new, Japanese-built, but Greek-owned, bulk carrier, the AntaiOS (Captain C. Zorgia), berthed at Cashin Quay yesterday afternoon, ready to load 12,000 tons of export coke for Venezuela. Bulk carriers are never particularly attractive vessels, but the long (590 ft Antaios. which has a gross tonnage of 16.600, a sharply flared and bulbous bow. goal-post masts and large cargo holds, is a striking vessel compared with many of her kind. She is paying her first visit to Lyttelton and after her arrival yesterday afternoon preparations were being made to load her bulk cargo with grabs and a conveyor belt. * * * Among fine vessels in Lyttelton at present is the Blue Star Line's 14-year-dd 10,619-ton Rockhampton Star, which has nearly 2000 tons of Liverpool general cargo to discharge. The Rockhampton Star (Captain J. S. Hunter) is one of a noted Blue Start quartet originally built for the Queensland beef chilled trade. But droughts upset this programme and diversification was necessary. Hence the Rockhampton Star, the Townsville Star, the Queensland Star and Gladstone Star (due here this week-end) are no strangers to Lyttelton. They are handsome vessels. The Rockhampton Star will also load at Lyttelton and other ports. She will discharge at Tema (Ghana), Las Palmas, Liverpool and Sheerness. She has limited passenger accommodation. * * * ARRIVALS Rangatira (6.15 a.m.), 9387, Capt. J. D. Cleaver, Wellington (U.S.S.). Wanaka (10.22 a.m.), 2900. Capt. R. H. Stewart, Dunedin (U.S.S.).
