Wool proposal supported

(New Zealand Press Association)

DUNEDIN, July 18.

The formation of the Wool Marketing Corporation should be encouraged, members of the meat and wool section of Otago Federated Farmers said today.

They spoke of a “floating population” who were against the authority’s formation, and w'ho attended most meetings held in the province to express their views. Mr W. Mirams said the national meat and wool section had unanimously passed a remit calling for the corporation. The conference had been pleased to see the Minister of Finance (Mr Muldoon) accept this decision. “If he hadn’t, our federation would have been set back at least 25 years.” New Zealand was not big enough for all farmers to be able to sell their wool where they liked, he said. Woolgrowers from the Gis-borne-East Coast district last night voted against immediate compulsory acquisition of New Zealand’s wool clip by the proposed wool marketing corporation. Nearly 400 sheepfarmers attended a meeting arranged by the Wool Action Committee, and after a long debate, voted 230 to 164 against compulsory acquisition. The principal speakers for the action committee were a former Federated Farmers leader, Mr P. Plummer, and Mr A. Anderson; the Wool Board’s proposals were de-

fended by Messrs F. G. Spackman and A. G. Lawrence. The meeting ended about midnight.
