HEAVY BOOKINGS
Spare holiday accommodation in the Nelson province, between December 20 and mid-January, is almost non-existent. This applies particularly to caravan power sites at the most popular camps and motel I accommodation. Bookings at the Tahunanui Beach motor camp in Nelson are extremely heavy. Last week only 20 of 360 caravan power sites remained and all cabin, hut and motel accommodation is booked. There are plenty of tent sites and caravan sites without power, but these are expected to be taken within the next few weeks.
The Kaiteriteri Beach motor camp is completely booked out from Christmas to mid-January. There is already a waiting list of 90 for caravan power sites and 150 for any sites at all during this period. Motels at the beach and the surrounding district are all booked —most of them since the last holiday season. All 48 cabins at Pohara Beach camp have been booked from just before Christmas as have the three self-contained units. Of 132 caravan power sites, only eight remained at the beginning of the month and these have since been booked. All cabin accommodation at the Brook Street reservoir camp in Nelson city has been booked, but there are plenty of caravan sites remaining.
All motels throughout the province have been completely booked out — mainly since January—for the main holiday period. A spokesman for a Nelson accommodation bureau said she hoped to have about 200 homes available to let a little later but these would not fill the
demand that is usually created about August. Already she had 45 inquiries for homes during the holiday period. All hire caravan services report full bookings for the Christmas period and some, right through to the end of February.
