Nelson has everything

(A personal message from the Mayor of Nelson, Mr R. A. McLennan) To those readers who have never been to Nelson before, may I extend a special welcome through these pages to one of the most exciting provinces in

New Zealand. It has some-; thing for everyone. To the young at heart, it offers excitement in the gay crowds on our beautiful beaches in carnival season, ski-ing in the winter, the happy companionship of fruit and tobacco and

hop pickers at harvest time if you want a working holiday, and always action at night with the top groups who follow the crowds to this part of the world.

To those who are not so young firstly we offer comfort. Whether you choose a tourist hotel, country pub, private guest house, motel or motor camp we are proud to offer a range to suit your taste, and extend to you a sincere and personal welcome. Then you will enjoy motoring through our countryside. Come and see the Marble Mountain with rivers gushing from the ground; visit Farewell Spit and the tame eels; search a lime-stone cave or for gold in the Wakamarina; join the Skyline Safari to learn of our colourful history and to enjoy panoramic views in a breath-taking ride in the heights. Pick a secluded river bank for a picnic, or a trout stream if you are a fisherman. Join the crowds who flock to the races amid surroundings that will delight yoube they the power boats at Lake Rotoiti, the cars at Tahuna Back Beach, or the horses at Richmond Park or whatever sport you choose.

To those who are ambitious we draw your attention to the fastest developing city in the South Island —with the fourth busiest airport, the regular rail ferry connections, a Class I highways system, and an expanding overseas port. To those who have visited or stayed in Nelson before I extend an invitation to you to return and enjoy again the sunshine and hospitality, to visit familiar haunts, to use the new facilities for indoor sports and conferences and to inspect new residential development and the preservation of past cultures. I offer no apology if you think I am a little biased in my enthusiasm for this province and for what it has to offer now and in the future. You would be correct. But the things that make me a little biased are the reasons why I am proud to live in and work for Nelson.
