‘Press’ plan praised

A suggested new format for the Christchurch senior club Rugby competition, published last week in “The Press”, had a good deal of merit, officials of the Canterbury Rugby Union said last night.

The chairman of the management committee (Mr J. Storey) at the last night’s meeting said that the scheme, which is built around the in-ter-twining of the two present championships, seemed to him quite sound, and he said because it was possible that two further teams may come into the senior grade next year, some new system might have to be looked at. The chairman of the competition committee (Mr C. H. J. Rhodes) said other methods for revamping the senior competition had also been proposed, but he, too, saw a good deal of merit in

the one published by “The Press." Mr Rhodes added that there could be difficulties, depending on the length of the programme for representative matches, but If adopted, it would probably mean more Rugby for senior players. < It was decided to have the competitions committee look further into the proposal. Seven-a-slde Mr Rhodes reported that 19 entries had been received for the senior seven-a-side tournament at Lancaster Park on August 19. He said a few more entries were needed for the tournament to occupy a full afternoon.
