MAHANGA WINS

(N.Z. Pres* Association) AUCKLAND.

K. Mahanga (Tokoroa) retained his New Zealand professional middle-weight boxing title in the crowded Auckland town hall last night by a majority decision over a surprisingly good contender — the 21-year-old M. Manuela, of Auckland. Both men had weighed in right on the list 61b middleweight limit. Manuela upset Mahanga with his crowding, mauling style, and at one stage it seemed he might take the title on a points decision. Manuela won the first two rounds and, although he dropped the third narrowly, still held a points advantage going into the fourth. In the fourth, Mahanga fought better, beginning to ride Manuela’s punches and counterpunch very hard. In the fifth round, which he took easily, Mahanga was a polished, seasoned professional against whom Manuela’s exceptional toughness was all that saved him.
