LONG WAIT

(N.Z. Press Association > WELLINGTON, July 17. Waiting has become a big part of Miss Vivienne Hamlin’s career as a beauty contest participant. The New Zealand delegate to the "Miss Asia” contest waited five weeks in Manila before winning fourth place last Saturday and may have to wait a full year to get married if she wins her next beauty contest bid.

Miss Hamlin, aged 20, of Wellington, telephoned her fiance, Mr David Scott, after the contest and told him she was relieved it was all over. Mr Scott said in Wellington that she arrived in Manila for the contest five weeks ago and was the only contestant there for the next two weeks.

He said the contest was supposed to start a week earlier but only half the entrants had shown up so it was delayed until last Saturday. But even though the “Miss Asia” competition is over. Miss Hamlin’s prolonged trip is just beginning. She now has to go on a tour of the Philippines that was scheduled before the contest but postponed because of floods there. Then she will accompany the contest winner. Miss Janet Coutts, of Australia on a two-week tour of the Far East.

Another long wait may be ahead for the couple if Miss Hamlin wins her next contest, the "Miss Queen of the Pacific” Contest, to be held in Melbourne in February.

Miss Hamlin and Mr Scott plan to be married next Easter Saturday, but if she takes first place in Melbourne, she wilt not be allowed to get married for a year afterwards.
