KETCH DRIFTS

Guide into Kaikoura

A 36ft ketch, Jane Rhodes, drifted from near Motunau to. Kaikoura after getting caught in the southerly storm which buffeted Canterbury yesterday.

The vessel, which had three persons aboard, was not disabled but last night radioed for a boat to guide them into Kaikoura.

Mr N. F. Pipe, who maintains a radio watch for the Banks Peninsula Cruising Club, said he first heard from the Jane Rhodes at 6.45 a.m. when it said it had struck the storm and had had to drop its sails. The owner, Mr C. B. Hurd, of Christchurch, had radioed that the boat had met winds up to 40 knots. At times the Jane Rhodes’s engines had to be started to keep her from shore, said Mr Pipe. At Kaikoura the local fishing boat, Pakeha, put to sea to guide Mr Hurd in. The Jane Rhodes made port about 11 p.m. The vessel had been on a trip from Picton to Lyttelton. Mr Hurd’s brother, Mr J. Hurd, and Mr R. Crowley, both of Christchurch, were also aboard.
