RELIEF FOR SEAMEN

Financial aid distributed to the dependents of shipwrecked seamen by the Shipwreck Relief Society of New Zealand last year amounted to $825, according to the society’s annual report.

The aim of the society is to provide. an immediate grant of money to assist dependants until the proper authorities and insurance companies can give permanent assistance.

The society’s grants this year were made in the loss of five vessels, all fishing boats, and the grants ranged from $25 to $2OO in respect of the incidents.

Two other grants, $l5O to the Otago branch of the British Sailors’ Society and $43.2C to the London office of the sable society, were also made during the year. Both grants were for seamen’s welfare.

The society now has accumulated funds of $32,503. “Considering that the society has expended more than $41,000 during the past decade, these funds are by no means excessive for dealing with any major maritime disaster,” the report says.
