WELFARE OFFICER

Applications for a community welfare worker will be called by the City Council in spite of the fact that the Government is not prepared to assist financially. The associate Minister of Social Welfare (Mr Highet) said the consideration of the request for financial help must be deferred because of many requests to the Government.

Cr H. L. Garrett said that the council should not rush into the appointment. Government financial assistance, and also from other local bodies in the area, should be given. The chairman of the staff committee (Cr D. R. Caygill) said that all the welfare organisations agreed that the appointment was needed. The staff committee had three times approved the appointment in principle.

Christchurch would be the first city in New Zealand to have a council community welfare officer, Cr Caygill said. The council resolved unanimously to advertise for applicants for the position and to continue to press for financial assistance from the Government.
