Flood toll in Japan

(N.Z. Press Assn<—Copyright) TOKYO, July 17. The heavy rains that have caused landslides and floods in most areas of Japan in the last two weeks have been responsible for 370 deaths, the National Policy Agency reports, addding that 67 persons are still missing, believed killed. The rains lashed most of Japan, but the hardest-hit areas were in the south-west where landslides crumbled houses and floods did heavy damage.

Officials say that the flood waters are now receding, but that in some areas people will have to rely on relief aid for several more days. The Minister of Construction estimates property damage at 142,600 million yen (about s4som).
