PIES TAKEN UNDRESSED

(N.Z. Press Association)

OAMARU, July 12. A 25-year-old man had to remove his trousers to squeeze through a narrow gap in a successful bid to break into a pie-cart, said Sergeant A. J. Elliott in the Oamaru Magistrate’s Court today. Robert Ernest Troon, a railway worker, was charged with the theft of $37 worth of food and cigarettes from the pie-cart. Mr T. A. Ross, S.M., remanded him on bail until July 26 for sentence.

Sergeant Elliott said that a police patrol saw Troon holding a tray of steak, bacon, oysters, and cigarettes near the pie-cart on July 1. When he saw the patrol car, he dropped the tray and ran. He was chased by the police, who later found his trousers on a fence after Troon had discarded them in his hurry.
