Chinese may miss first N.Z. match

(N.Z P.A. Staff Correspondent/ SINGAPORE. The touring Chinese table tennis team appears certain to miss the first scheduled match of its New Zealand visit because it will not now arrive until Sunday.

Although the situation is confused, New Zealand and Singapore officials believe the

21-member Chinese party will not catch the Air New Zealand flight leaving for Auckland on Thursday. Air New Zealand is still holding seats for the party, but the Chinese appear to be sticking to their original instructions from Peking to remain in Singapore until Saturday. New Zealand table tennis officials in Wellington have contacted Peking, asking that the team be allowed to leave on Thursday to arrive in Auckland on Friday, and play the first match of its itinerary on Saturday night. The Chinese’s playing schedule in Singapore has already been extended by an extra exhibition match to be played today.
