LONG COAL TRAIN

Australia’s longest train has completed successful tests in the central Queensland coalfields. The train consists of six diesel-electric locomotives and 148 waggons which trail for a mile and a quarter. It ran 125 miles from the new Goonyella mine to Hay Point on the coast, earning 8047 tons of coal. The train was manned by a driver, a fireman and a guard, and the six locomotives were linked by remote control. Three of the locomotives were at the front and the other three midway through the train. The Queensland Government Railways say the train is longer than any other running on a 3ft 6in system.
