New centre opened
After more than six months of hard work altering and renovating an oid house in Collingwood Street, New Brighton, the Christchurch East Rotary Club has completed a new senior citizens’ centre. At the opening of the centre last week, the keys were handed to the chairman of the Christchurch Aged People’s 'Welfare Council (Dr H. R. Donald). Dr Donald said that it was the first suburban centre of its type in Christchurch. Bought last year for $13,000, the property is now valued at $25,000. It was bought with money raised by members of the Christchurch East Rotary Club, and all the reconstruction work has been done voluntarily. Wives of club members, who belong to the Inner Wheel, raised money to provide curtains, china and a piano for the centre. The centre comprises a large recreational and meeting room, a kitchen, three sitting rooms, which will be used for occupational therapy, and a caretaker’s flat.
