Rail dispute not settled

No settlement in the dispute between the Railways Department and railwaymen at Lyttelton had been reached yesterday after discussions between parties at both the local and national levels. The dispute is over travelling allowances wanted by railwaymen working in Lyttelton and living elsewhere. In the meantime they have banned working on trains to Lyttelton outside 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. A spokesman for the Union Steam Ship Company said yesterday that passengers without their own transport would find that the regular ;Transport Board bus services ‘would fit in quite well with departures and arrivals of the inter-island ferry during the week; but this 'meant a walk from the wharf to the bus stop outside the Lyttelton Post Office.
