PATRIARCH’S SUCCESSOR

Govt veto on U.S. candidate (N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) INSTANBUL. July 10. The Turkish Government has vetoed the candidacy of Archbishop lakovos, the spiritual leader of the Greek Orthodox Church in North and South America to succeed Patriarch Athenagoras I, who has died, aged 86. A Foreign Ministry spokesman says that Archbishop lakovos, who is 60, is a United States citizen, and that, under a treaty between Turkey and Greece, the Patriarch of the Orthodox community must hold Turkish citizenship. Archbishop lakovos was born in Turkey, but has lived mostly in the United States since 1945. Church sources in Turkey had said that he was the leading candidate to succeed Patriarch Athenagoras, who was recognised as spiritual leader of the world’s 157 million members of the Greek Orthodox Church.
