Tax task eases

The Inland Revenue Department has almost disposed of its biggest single task of the year—processing returns from salary and wage earners.

Up to yesterday the department had received more than 90,000 returns, leaving about 15,000 to come. These are expected during the next three months. Last week only 3000 returns arrived: and the number from now on will be progressively fewer. The District Commissioner of Taxes (Mr C. K. Jones) said yesterday that the department was still waiting for reconciliation statements from 1500 employers who should have submitted them by May 15. Letters have been sent to the employers and if the statements are not forthcoming within reasonable time the department will consider prosecution.
