Six world records

(N Z Prctts Association/ WHANGAREI. Big-game fishing clubs in North Auckland have had one of their most successful seasons for about 10 years. Six world records, two unconfirmed world records and three national records had beeen recorded by the three North Auckland clubs when the season ended on Friday. Eleven blue marlin were caught in the Bay of Islands —the greatest number of this species in the history of the Bay of Islands Swordfish Club. The total of 97 marlin caught in the Bay of Islands was more than twice the total taken in the two previous seasons. Members of the Whangarei Deep Sea Anglers’ Club, based at Tutukaka, had their best season for many years, catching 19 marlin. STRIPED MARLIN The Whangaroa Big Game Fishing Club's striped marlin catch was double that of last season. Four world records, two unconfirmed world records, and two national records are credited to the Bay of Islands Swordfish Club. Whangaroa has one world record confirmed and the Whangarei club has one world record and national record to its credit. Five marlin were caught this year in June whereas last year the last marlin were caught in April.
