Sir Leslie Munro to retire

(N.Z. Press Association) HAMILTON, July 2. Sir Leslie Munro, National member of Parliament for Hamilton West, has decided to retire from politics. Sir Leslie Munro, who is aged 71, said that he had decided “in consideration of long term interests not to accept nomination.” He said he had greatly appreciated the vote of confidence given him by his supporters. “But after my recent illness I think I ought to take things a little easier than would be the case in Parlia-

mentary life,” he said. However, he had received an unconditional medical clearance from his doctor to go ahead with this year’s General Election campaign if he had

wanted. Sir Leslie Munro has been a member of Parliament for nine years—six of them as member for Wfiipa before the electoral boundaries were changed and his electorate renamed Hamilton West. Sir Leslie Munro is a lawyer and a former editor of the “New Zealand Herald." He is president of

the Waikato Savings Bank and says he will

continue with this work. His retirement comes at the end of 20 years continuous involvement in international and national affairs. In' 1952, he was appointed New Zealand Ambassador to the United States. Hi was elected president of the United Nations General Assembly in 195758. He was also the United Nations special representative on the Hungarian question from

1958 to 1962. “I will continue, of course, to, support the National Party and work in the interests of the nation and the progressive Waikato

area,” Sir Leslie Munro

said. The Waikato branch of the National Party is expected to name a candidate for Hamilton Wfest at a meeting next Saturday.
