Relicensing rush

Motorists who had failed to relicense their cars before the end of June packed the New Brighton Post Office when it opened for three hours on Saturday. Between 9 a.m. and noon, 370 licence labels were issued, compared with 320 for the full day on Friday. The office was originally to have closed at 11.30 a.m., but stayed open for an extra half hour because of the crowd.

The rush was expected: "We had a full staff on, and they did a fine job. They were flat out,” said the branch supervisor (Mr J. L. McCammon) yesterday. Six tellers’ windows were in use.

When the 1971-72 licensing period ended on Friday evening, there were still about 14,000 Christchurch motorists who had not relicensed their vehicles.
