Canterbury shows flaws but retains table tennis cup

For tho third successive year, Canterbury won the Rein Cup at the southern quadrangular table tennis tournament at the week-end.

But while both the Canterbury men s and women’s sides cruised to victory against Southland and South Canterbury, the performance against Otago was not soi convincing.

At Dunedin last week. Canterbury crushed Otago, IG-2. in the! men'» contest, but on Saturday; was fortunate to win 7-5. The! top Otago pair, M. M Duffy and G J. Williams. led 20-16 in the third set against V. N. Bright-, veil and W D Adamson, but the two Canterbury players hit sen-: •ibiy to erase the deficit and; um 22-20 B. T. Cross, the newcomer to the team, played in the top half of the draw and was the only member to remain unbeaten. All his victories were straight-set affairs, and his play was very sound and confident. The Otago singles champion, M. W. Bur-

rowes (Canterbury ) beat both the top contenders, M. M. Duffy and J. Angus, last week, but inexplicably lost to them in their clash on Saturday evening. Brightwell and Adamson maintained a high standard through-

out the two days, although both were surprisingly beaten by G. J. Williams. The women’s team downed Otago 8-4 but again there were lapses evident in Canterbury’s performance. Misses P A. Marks and J. G Morris—usually a reliable doubles combination—, lost both contests. They should: have defeated the second Otago ! pair in straight games. South Canterbury gained ani unexpected 7-5 win against Otago to finish second in the women’s section. Special interest centred on the performance of Mrs G. Vnderdown 'formerly Miss G. Kemp> wno represented South Canterbury for the first time. Ranked eighth in New Zealand last year, Mrs Underdown lacked hard match play and lost to Mrs T. May. However, her shots improved with each match, and she will have strong claims for a position In the South Island team.

A former senior club player in Christchurch, J. Lelliott (Southland) had a shock win
