Frederik flops

(N.Z. Press Association) MELBOURNE. The New Zealand jumper, Frederik, turned in a disappointing display in the Australian Grand National Hurdle at Flemington on Saturday. finishing a distant tenth of the 16 runners which completed the course. Frederik was never close to the leaders and apart from from a brief forward move near the mile, he never looked like finishing in the money. The race was won in record time by the local five-year-old, Our Leo, which made the pace for most of the way and completed the three-mile journey in the smart time of smin 21.9 sec, which Melbourne officials claim to be a world record over hurdles.

Our Leo was expertly ridden by K. Bourke, who rode Faux Pas to victory in last year’s race. Faux Pas this time, however, could finish only fourth. Our Leo won by three lengths from the favourite, Solum, with a long neck to Coogee Bay.
