MAUI GAS Move by Govt
(N.Z. Press Association)
NEW PLYMOUTH, July 2.
The Government has advanced a further possible technique which might open the way to agreement in the Maui gas negotiations, the Minister of Industries and Commerce (Mr Taiboys) has announced.
He made the statement in a letter received by Mr R. M. Barclay (Lab., New Plymouth) yesterday.
“I am not prepared to elaborate on this at present, but you may be assured that the Government regards, and will continue to regard, the matter as one of urgency,” Mr Taiboys said. “It is quite misleading to confuse lack of action with the absence of immediate and obvious results,” he said. “I can assure you that procrastination in negotiations is not and will not be the reason for preventing the development of ga s and petroleum resources.” Mr Taiboys said the issue was to find a price with which Shell BP and Todd Oil Services, Ltd, could live and which also gave New Zealand advantage over alternative fuel sources and a reasonable return from a “very substantial” investment it would have to make. One of the advantages of gas recognised by the Government was its freedom from pollution.
