BISHOPS PROTEST

(N.Z. Press Assn. —Copyripht) DURBAN, July 2.

Every one of South Africa’s Anglican bishops has joined in lodging a strong protest at the Government’s ban on Mr David de Beer, the administrative secretary of the Christian Institute. It is believed to be the first time for at least 11 years that all the bishops have been united in such a protest. Meeting in Durban, they said: “Once again, the State has seen fit to use its power to ban a devoted member of the Christian community.” Mr de Beer, on whom a banning order for five years has been served, was formerly diocesan secretary of the South-West African diocese of Damaraland, and is a member of the standing committee of the Church of the Province of South Africa. Together with Bishop Colin Winter, and others, he was also expelled from SouthWest Africa.

“In neither instance has any charge been laid in a court of law, and thus we see the rule of law flouted once more,” the bishops said. “In all conscience, we . . . cannot see this happen without raising the strongest protest on behalf of the Church to which he belongs.”
