Cyclist near record

J. H. Chesmar made a strong challenge for one of the most notable of short Canterbury cycling records, and T. C. Gibbs won his first cup race since returning from cash ranks in races on Saturday, Winning the open Hill Climb—up Hackthorne Road to the Sign of th e Kiwi—from a field deprived of the other leading contenders by the national Hope Gibbons Shield final, Chesmar recorded a time of 14min 39sec. This not only gave him a win by nearly a minute from H. R. Bush, but took Chesmar to within lOsec of T. J. Tabak’s record set in 1966. A year later, Tabak went 18sec slower, and Chesmar’s time is, very notably, the second fastest recorded in this arduous time trial. In the afternoon. Gibbs won the Papanui Club’s John Limbrey Cup race of 35 miles at Clarkville. His llmin bunch included riders whose appearances recently have been rather limited: C. T. L. Stockwell and B. R. Chisholm, a young pair, and Gibbs and A. B. Mahon of a much older vintage. They worked steadily together in the head wind on the outward journey, and were only 2min from the front, and nearly 4n?in ahead of the leading chasers after 15 miles.

By 20 miles, with the wind then at their backs, they had caught the front, and the bunch with R. D. Mann, the previous week’s classic winner, had caught only a minute of the deficit. Clearly, that was to be about all they would catch, too, as the wind whipped the front-markers along. Mahon was dropped, B. J. Day picked up, and Gibbs was clearly superior to th e rest in the sprint, with Stockwell challenging him most.

There was an intriguing battle for fastest time, and for most of the race, the scratch riders were onlv a few seconds in front of those off llmin. G. J. Duncan was the best of the break riders, but it was G. McG. Strahl who cleared out near the end to miss fastest time by only 6sec. J. P. S. Mullan won the scratch riders sprint, from G. V. Neale, but it was alleged he caused interference in the sprint and the placings were reversed. The scratch riders were originally penalised in the Avon Club’s 30 mile group handicap race. _ P L Paviell and K. F. C. Radburhd were the first and second scratch riders, clear of P. A. Jesson with the rest much further behind. However, it was alleged they had received assistance from some traffic and they were disqualified, before being restored on appeal. P. T. P Radburnd won very comfortably, taking off at Paparua on the return and staying 18sec clear of J. H. Sullivan and G. P. Sword. Results:—

Sword won the final five mile stage in the last 20 yards, and with it over-all victory in the A grade stage race held on Saturday morning by the Mairehau Novice Wheelmen. Lying third equal before the stage started, Sword and the others had good fortune with the bad luck of R. A. Campbell. Campbell was a clear leader i and a probable winner, but buckled a wheel two miles from the finish. Sword’s win then gave him a one-point win from S. P. White, who missed a winning chance by finishing third in the final stage. K. P. Basher, the B grade winner. caused a major upset in the second stage. His time of 4min 7sec for the two miles was a second faster than the first A grade rider, Campbell. S. A. Lynn won all the C grade stages, and so did R. Wood in the D grade. Results:—
