Airport bar’s steady trade
A steady trade was maintained at the cocktail bar which opened at Christchurch Airport on Saturday morning, with an increase in patronage later in the afternoon, according to the beverage manager (Mr S. V. Pojikar).
By noon, only about 14 patrons had christened the new Chart Room bar, but in the afternoon there were about 60 patrons in the bar at one time.
“Although a few curious people came from the city to look at the new bar, about 90 per cent of our patrons on Saturday were waiting for their flight departures,” Mr Pojikar said. “We did serve a few cocktails,” he said, "but most of the demand was for brandy, whisky, and beer.” The bar, which offers six choices of bottled beer, draught lager beer, aperitifs, liqueurs and cocktails, will be open from Monday to Saturday from 11 a.m. until half an hour after the last flight. Bar prices for beer average 50c for a small bottle and 40c for a 12oz glass. All spirits cost 40c and liqueurs 60c.
Water ski-ing.—A schoolgirl, Miss Debra McManus, aged 17, broke her own Australian water ski-ing speed record by eight miles an hour when she recorded a run of 93.2 miles an hour on the Hawkesbury River, about 30 miles from Sydney.
