Clarification of tour policy sought

The Halt All Racist Tours organisation has written to the Prime Minister (Mr Marshall) asking for a clarification of Government policy on the Springbok Rugby tour.

H.A.R.T.’s president (Mr T. Richards) asserts that the Government’s attitude has changed several times since Mr Marshall made his comprehensive statement. “We have asked Mr Marshall what measures he is prepared to take in an effort to ensure that the Springbok Rugby team is selected on merit,” Mr Richards says. “We have also asked Mr Marshall what he understands the term ‘selection on merit’ to mean, and whether there are any circumstances which would prompt him to advise against the tour taking place.” Mr Richards says that on at least one occasion Mr Marshall has made the point that

he is working for the selection of the Springbok team on merit. To H.A.R.T., Mr Richards says, there can be no compromise on true merit selection. The people of New Zealand, he says, deserve answers to the questions as to what Mr Marshall is doing over the tour, and what it is that he wants.
