SHIPPING NEWS Treneglos and tug reunited
Two old friends were reunited at Lyttelton early yesterday morning, when the Lyttelton Harbour Board’s 33-year-old, twin-screw tug Lyttelton H attended the newly arrived British cargo liner Treneglos during berthing at Gladstone Pier. In November, 1964, the 9854ton motor-vessel, which was then only a year old, grounded off Timaru’s Patlti Point and suffered severe underwater shell plating damage. She was ultimately assisted off by the Lyttelton 11 and the Dunedin tug Otago. Wool cargo was jettisoned into the water to lighten the Treneglos, but much was salvaged. Subsequently, the Lyttelton 11, under the command of a former Lyttelton harbourmaster, Captain A R. Champion, towed the Treneglos 260 miles from Timaru to Wellington where repairs were made to the damaged vessel tn the floating dock. This was no mean achievement, because the Treneglos. under towage, was bv no means seaworthy at that tune. Also on board the tug at the time, were the regular tugmaster (Captain F. A. G. Dawson). a Lyttelton pilot (Captain J. A. Barbour), and the chief engineer who was and still is Mr N. Pavne. of Lvttelton. Some of todav’s tug crew also took part The present master of the Treneglos. Captain L J. Annett. from Northern Ireland, was not on board the Treneglos at that time.
The Treneglos was originally a member of the Hain Steam Ship Company, Ltd. one of Britain's oldest companies. Cap-
tain Annett ioin-d this companv M years ago. Some years ago, this comnanv amalgamated with lames Nou-se, Ltd. another noted British company This became Hain-Nourse. Ltd. within the framework of the P and O combine This groun has recently disappeared The P and O has swallowed it.
Yesterdav it was noticeable that the Treneglos flew the P and O flag not only at the lackstaff forward—to signify group allegiance—but also at the mainmast, one of the first subsidi-
aries of the P and O to do so. The Treneglos was now, in fact, a straight out P and O vessel, Captain Annett said. Complete unification of the P and O group’s ships was now very much under way, Captain Annett said. 4s $ The two children of the chief engineer of the Treneglos, Mr T. P. Rae and Mrs Alice Rae, of Wishaw, Scotland, are among the youngest shipboard visitors to Lyttelton. Gillian will be two next week, and Stephanie, who is four, has a cold. Their large teddy bear is travelling with them. The Treneglos is disi charging gunnies (sacking), tea, I and general cargo from India, Bangladesh, and Ceylon, in addition to Australian cars.
Mr Rae has been transferred from the British India Steam ; Navigation fleet. an associate I member of the P and O group. I Such staff interchanges are a ; regular P and O feature today. The family will remain together until the Treneglos returns to Britain. When this will be. is vet unknown. Meantime, Mrs Rae has to keep an alert eye on her young charges at sea.
