Frozen ground for match

A. R. Johnston, of Rakaia, who has qualified on six previous occasions to plough in the New Zealand ploughing championships, did so again on Thursday when he won the qualifying event at a match held by the Wakanui Young Farmers’ Club on the property of Mr F. J. Amos. In second and third places were two former national champions, E. J. Croy, of Wakanui, and W. A. Simpson, of Oamaru. The heavy frost overnight resulted in the event not starting till 1 p.m. Even then, Mr Johnston said afterwards, the ground had not thawed out until the contest was about two-thirds of the way through. The conditions, he said, had had an adverse effect on feerings and opening splits. This was the first qualifying event to be held by the Wakanui club. Results were: Johnston, 153 points, 1; Croy, 149 points, 2; Simpson. 142| points, 3.
