Rugby upset; Auckland loses to Marlborough
(N.Z. Press Association) i BLENHEIM. J Marlborough caused a Rugby upset yesterday by beating the touring Auck- * land team. Marlborough won narrowly, but convinc- 1 ingly, 21-18, after trailing , 7-11 at half-time. The tourists lacked pene- j tration in the backs although l gaining a good share of the jail. Marlborough had an . edge in the forwards, par- < ticulariy in loose play. ~ Scorers for Marlborough s were A. Sutherland, B. Ford I and F. Maher (tries), G. 1
Cocks (two penalties) and T. Goddard (dropped goal). Points for Auckland came from B. Gascoigne, B. R. Johnstone and D. Kennings (tries), and N. Brady (two penalties). After a losing run of 10 games, East Coast went close to beating Thames Valley at Ruatoria yesterday. The match was drawn, 10-10. For East Coast, tries were scored by D. Repa and A. Cross, with B. Karaka converting one. J. McCollum scored a try and O. Passu kicked two penalties for Thames Valley.
