Music grant sought

_ The board of governors of Mairehau High School will apply to the Education Department for a $6OO grant to equip the music room at the school with six cassette taperecorders, junction boxes and headphones. The head of the music department (Mr T. Brown), told the board this week that the emphasis was more on oral work m music teaching today than in the past when pupils sat a written examination some without ever having heard a note of music, he said. With tape-recorders and headphones, different aspects of music could be demonstrated to groups of one class at the same time. The equipment could also be used by other departments, Mr Brown said.
