EXPORTS TO U.S. UP FOR QUARTER

(N.Z.P.A. Staff Correspondent) WASHINGTON, June 14. New Zealand’s exports to the United States earned SUSIOm more in the first quarter of this year than in the same period of 1971. Figures from the United States Bureau of the Census show that returns from casein sales rose SUS3m to SUS6.4m, and those for exports of lobster tails from SUS4.4m to sUSfl.6m. The surge in total export receipts to SUSS3m outdistanced a rise in the value of American exports to New Zealand —up SUS6.4m to SUS34.4m. Officials at the New Zealand trade office in Washington said the main reason for the. jump in the value of United States exports was the sale of diesel railway engines and parts worth SUS4.Bm. New Zealand’s imports of American-made electrical generating machinery rose from SUSI-5m to SUS3.2m. Sales of New Zealand sausage casings in the United States broiight sUSl.7m—up about SUSBOO,OOO on the period a year earlier. The value of hides and skins sales was up SUS9OO,OOO to SUSS.3m. Higher American beef

prices were reflected in the returns covering beef and veal sales. These were up about SUS6OO,OOO to SUS2I.Im. Higher cheese sales in the United States resulted in earnings of SUSIm. Last year in the period New Zealand sold only SUSIOO,OOO worth in America.
