ITALIAN UNREST
Doctors on strike again (N.Z. P.A. -Reuter—Copyright) ROME, June 16. Italians were without medical care, except for emergencies, yesterday, when 100,000 doctors went on a 24-hour strike in support of medical administrators who say that they are overworked and underpaid. About 1500 hospitals throughout the country trimmed their services to the minimum, including their casualty departments and first-aid stations. The strike was called to support demands by 3500 medical administrators, who are responsible for Italy’s entire health service and are demanding a doubling of their numbers, and pay increases of 150,000 lire ($214) a month. Their unions say that the lowest paid among them earn only 140,000 lire ($204) a month. The doctors, taking part in what they call “a national day of protest,” are also pressing for urgent reforms of the country’s health services.
