REGIONAL BODIES
Over the last year, the executive has given close consideration to proposals for the extension of regional government, according to a report from the executive to the Counties’ Conference. The executive said that a special committee would be set up by the Internal Affairs Department to make further investigations into the possibility of introducing permissive general legislation enabling multipurpose regional authorities to be set tip. The executive said it had referred to this committee a remit passed last year to the effect that, in view of the Local Government Commission’s evident support for the extension of regional government, the executive examine the likely longterm effects of the proposal. The executive said that on several occasions, it had given its views to the Government, and had also had discussions with the department and the Municipal Association.
