Teacher-trainee rise predicted
A solution to a long-standing claim by secondary teacher trainees for increased allowances may be imminent, according to the general secretary of the Post-Primary Teachers Association (Mr P. W. Boag).
Mr Boag was commenting from Wellington on his visit to Christchurch yesterday afternoon to discuss the claim with students and staff at the secondary division of the Christchurch Teachers* College. The trainees want a substantial increase in the allowances paid when they travel long distances from the college, sometimes for up to six weeks teaching practice, several times a year. At present, students receive $4 a week boarding allowance for out-of-town
board, and $3 a week to keep their board in town. This allowance was described as totally inadequate by the president of the PostPrimary Teachers’ Association branch at the Christchurch Teachers’ College (Mr J. Chapman) yesterday. “If nothing is forthcoming on this claim soon, there will almost certainly be students who will rightly refuse to go out on section next term. They are simply not prepared to risk out-of-pocket expenses of up to $BO for what is a legally required part of college tuition.” t
