Youth project considered
A project to assist youth is being considered by the Soroptimist Club of Christchurch, Miss H. O’Connor said in her annual report presented to the annual meeting recently.
At a conference in Melbourne last year clubs in New Zealand and Australia were asked to take up a two-year project to assist youth.
A committee had been set up to study ways of helping in areas of need where assistance was not already forthcoming, and further research would be done.
Donations made during the year included a $4OO gift to Cholmondeley Home for Children. Other donations included $l2O to the Save the Children Fund, and $B6 to a multiple sclerosis patient.
Among the club’s fundraising efforts was the annual “Bride of the Year” contest, which raised 400.
The club continued to sponsor two children and to carry out community service home visits.
Tribute was paid to the work of Miss R. I. Cleary, who resigned as honorary secretary after 18 years. In
recognition of her “steriing” work for the club, she was made a life member. A memorial fund was set up as a tribute to a late foundation member, Mrs Lillian Blakely. Officers were elected as follows:—President, Miss B. Loughhead; vice-presidents, Misses D. Lock, Z. D. Sawers; treasurer, Miss P. Smerdori; executive, Misses D. Lye, D. Feaver, M. Rae, J. Hatherley, Mrs G. Hollander; divisional union delegates, Misses R. Goodland, B. Loughhead.
