SHIPPING DECLINE

Roll-on ships blamed (N.Z. Press Association, AUCKLAND, April 28. The Minister of Transport (Mr Gordon) has blamed the decline of coastal shipping on the introduction of roll-on vessels at Auckland. The Minister was replying to a letter from the Deputy Leader of the Labour Party, wich expressed concern about the plight of Onehunga workers and the fall-off of trade there. The Minister said there had been a marked effect on trade at Onehunga, after roll-on, roll-off facilities were provided in Auckland.

But shipping sources were unanimous that the Railways, by giving cut-rates to freight forwarders, were taking away their trade. A Union Steam Ship Company official said the roll-on ships were running much less than full and only got more cargo when the rail ferries were out of action for surveys or other reasons. He forecast that the situation would get worse when the third rail ferry came into service later this year.
