Miners mixed, industrials firm in Australia

Mining scrip was evenly mixed in moderate trading on Australian stock exchanges yesterday, oils traded irregularly, and industrials were fractionally firmer. Bougainville firmed 3c at 363 c, and N.B.H.C. rose 5c at 425 c; other established miners to post gains were B.H. South; up 10c to 240 c, and Hamersley up 3c to 238 c. Leading miners, C.R.A. and Peko, lost throughout the day, with C.R.A. down 10c to 630 c, and Peko down 8c to 940 c. Most uraniums were weaker.

After the announcement by T.N.T. that it had withdrawn the bid for Ansett, the shares added 10c, to 240 c. Ansett dropped 5c to 94c. Other industrials were steady to firm. B.H.P. advanced 5c to 1240 c in the leading group of industrials. Philip Morris rose 10c to 1230 c. Banking institutions were firm throughout the day, with: Bank of N.S.W. adding 4c to 820 c. Breweries gained with Tooths adding 2c to 788 c and Carlton United advancing 10c

to 530 c. However, Swan lost 7c to 245 c. Frozen Foods, the subject of a take-over bid from International Telephone and Telegraph Corporation, fell 15c to 330 c. Medical Supplies N.Z., Ltd, has received acceptances for more than 51 per cent of the Auckland Drug Company, Ltd, shares, the company says. The merger offer, which is conditional on 75 per cent acceptance by Auckland Drug shareholders, is to close on May 5. However, the date may be extended. A counter take-over bid by Kempthorne Prosser and Company, Ltd, is conditional on 51 per cent acceptance.
