Criticism by retailer

(N.Z. Press Association)

WELLINGTON, April 28. The campaign by manufacturers to create an unemployment scare was “irresponsible and misleading,” the president of the New Zealand Retailers’ Federation (Mr L. W. Smith) said. “Retailers are determined to see that local manufacturing is protected. Generally this should be by tariff rather than by quantitative control.” Mr Smith said the new import licensing schedule would not lead to an increase in the volume of imports. Price and freight-rate increases would absorb license increases for most goods. Mr Smith added that the present decline in employment was more a result of reduced activity in some industries such as building.
