ROTARY PROJECT
Senior citizens centre
Members of the Rotary Club of Christchurch East are working on a $13,000 project to buy and renovate an old house in Collingwood Street, New Brighton, for the Christchurch Aged People’s Welfare Council. The Rotarians have had working bees at the house every Wednesday and Saturday since January, and they hope to have the interior alterations finished in June.
The house will be run by the Christchurch Aged People’s Welfare Council as a senior citizens’ centre, and it will comprise a large 700 sq. ft meeting-room, a television lounge—in which occupational classes will be held daily—and kitchen and bathroom facilities. Work cn the house has included rough-casting, and the replacement of most of the iron roof, as well as reconstruction of the interior.
Landscaping of the large grounds will continue for some months, but it is hoped that the whole project will be completed—and paid for —by the end of the year.
