CHANCE FOR SALEYARDS

Under existing rights of use the Canterbury Saleyards Company could stay on its Addington site until the end of time, if it wished, the chairman of the Riccarton Borough Council’s town planning committee (Cr J. B. Midgley) said last evening. He was being questioned about the reviewed district planning scheme for the borough. In the past, said Cr Midgley, the site could be used only as a saleyards and it could only have been sold for use as a saleyards. Now under the first review of the district scheme, it would be possible for the company to sell for high-rise housing, flats or for an industrial project. The intention was to make it easier and more attractive for the company to leave the area, he said.
