Prominent piper dies

(NX. Press Association) WELLINGTON, April 27. Pipe Major Robert Brown, formerly one of the Queen’s pipers at Balmoral, who toured New Zealand last year and was expected back next month, died at Balmoral on Monday. Regarded as one of the outstanding pipers of the century, he became ill on a tour of Australia which was to have brought him to New Zealand on May 15. He recovered sufficiently to be able to travel home to Balmoral. Pipe Major Brown retired in 1970, and gave recitals and held classes during a 10-week tour of New Zealand last year.
